この度clinic（東京・三軒茶屋）では、キルトアーティストKione（木織音）の個展
「Floating Shapes」を開催します。

パッチワークキルトは、生地を重ねて縫いとめ、布を継いでいく手仕事から生まれます。世界各地で暮らしの知恵として育まれ、やがて色と形を構成する表現へと開かれてきました。かつてソニア・ドローネーが、一枚のキルトから抽象絵画への糸口をつかんだように、布を継ぐ営みは、しばしば表現の源泉になっています。

色彩では抽象絵画の先駆者ヒルマ・アフ・クリント、織物ではバウハウスのグンタ・シュテルツェル、さらにロシア構成主義の造形に刺激を受けてきたKione にとって、縫うことは、見せるための飾りつけ以上に、色と形の思いがけない出会いに気づく、発見と喜びの時間でもあります。
本展では、彼女自身が「Floating Shapes（宙に浮く形）」と名付けた新作を発表します。

単色の背景の上に、模様の異なる布のユニットがまるで宙に浮かぶように散らされたキルト作品は、表情の異なるビジュアルとテクスチャーによって、静止しているはずの布の上に、リズムと奥行きを生み出します。また、素材になるのは、異なる時間と場所で織られた布たち。さまざまな記憶が宿る布を一枚ずつ継ぎ合わせることで、新しい作品のなかにいくつもの時間が重なっていきます。

“単色の背景の上に、いくつかの異なるパッチワークデザインを散りばめる。このデザイン形式を、私は『floating shapes（宙に浮く形）』と呼んでいます。昨年作った《disparate elements（異なる要素）》をきっかけに、デザインの異なるパッチワークが同じキルトのなかに混在している風景に惹かれるようになりました。そこから辿り着いたのが、今回の『Floating Shapes』というテーマです。画面に散りばめているのは、前回clinic で発表した《Bits and Pieces》以降、自分のなかに蓄積してきた、パッチワークデザインの『単語』のようなものたちです。” ―Kione

Kione（木織音）
1993 年東京生まれ。2015 年、米国ベニントン大学卒業。在学中は主にビジュアルアートと衣
装デザインを学ぶ。2012 年に「Kione's」を立ち上げ、2013 年、パッチワーク用の布地を手
にしたことをきっかけにキルト制作を本格化。一点もののキルト、クッション、衣服などを手
がける。即興的な構図で形や色を縫い止め、「色の瞬間」を捉えた作品をつくる。

clinic (Tokyo / Sangenjaya) is pleased to present "Floating Shapes," a solo exhibition by quilt artist Kione (Kione Kochi). This is her second solo exhibition at clinic, and her first in five years since "COLOR MOMENTS" in 2021.

Patchwork is the handcraft of layering and stitching fabric, piecing together scraps of cloth. Nurtured around the world as part of everyday life, it gradually opened up into a form of expression composed of colors and shapes.

Just as Sonia Delaunay once found her way toward abstract painting through a single quilt, the act of piecing fabric together has often been a wellspring of artistic expression. For Kione ̶who has drawn inspiration from Hilma af Klint, a pioneer of abstract painting, in her use of color; from Gunta Stölzl of the Bauhaus in textiles; and from the forms of Russian Constructivism sewing is more than a way to create decoration: it is a time of discovery and joy, of noticing unexpected juxtapositions between colors and shapes.

In this exhibition, she presents a new body of work titled "Floating Shapes."
In these pieces, different quilt blocks are scattered across monochrome grounds as if suspended in space; through their contrasting hues and textures, they generate rhythm and depth on the still, cloth surface.

The quilts are composed of fabrics woven at different times and places. As she pieces together scraps that each carry their own memories, layers of time accumulate within every new work.

"I have been experimenting with a design theme in which different quilt blocks are scattered against a monochrome background. I refer to these as ‘floating shapes.’ Since making the piece Disparate Elements last year, I have been drawn to the scenery of different designs and scales of patchwork coexisting within a single quilt. Each block is a part of a growing vocabulary of shapes and designs that I have been building since I presented Bits and Pieces during my last exhibition at clinic." ―Kione

about Kione
Born in Tokyo in 1993, Kione graduated from Bennington College in 2015, where she　primarily studied visual art and costume design. She launched her brand "Kione's" in
2012, and in 2013 after purchasing a set of quilting fabric began making patchwork
pieces. She creates one-of-a-kind quilts, pillows, and garments, stitching shapes and
colors into improvised compositions that capture "color moments."
